Brighter Days Ahead: Tips for Combating Seasonal Depression

By Jordyn Windnagle - January 22, 2025

Seasonal depression, often referred to as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), affects many people during the colder months when days are shorter and sunlight is scarce. If you notice changes in your mood, energy levels, or motivation during the winter, you’re not alone. The good news is that we’re already past the darkest days and there are ways to fight back while we await warm, sunny days! Here are some actionable tips to help lift your spirits and keep seasonal depression at bay.

maximize natural light

Sunlight is one of the best natural remedies for seasonal depression.

  • Open curtains and blinds. Let in as much natural light as possible.
  • Sit by windows. If you work or read indoors, position yourself near a window during the daytime.
  • Take a morning walk. Bundle up and step outside to soak in the daylight. Even a short walk can make a world of difference.

If natural light is hard to come by, consider investing in a light therapy lamp, which mimics sunlight and can help regulate your mood.

stay on top of your physical health

Exercise is a proven mood booster. Physical activity releases endorphins, which combat stress and improve overall well-being.

  • Aim for 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days. Activities like yoga, walking, or cycling are great options.
  • Consider indoor workout classes or following along with online fitness routines if the weather is harsh.
  • Stay hydrated, and drink herbal teas for warmth and comfort on chilly days.

Find something you enjoy, and stick to it— it’ll give you something to look forward to.

maintain a routine

Establishing consistency in your daily life provides a sense of stability.

  • Wake up and go to bed at the same time every day.
  • Plan regular meals and activities to give your days purpose.
  • Schedule something enjoyable each week, such as coffee with a friend, movie nights, or engaging in hobbies.

don't isolate yourself

It’s easy to withdraw from social interactions when you’re feeling down, but staying connected is key.

  • Reach out to friends or family to catch up, even if it’s over a quick phone call or video chat.
  • Join local clubs, book groups, or volunteer opportunities.
  • If your feelings persist, talk to a therapist or counselor for additional support.

Seasonal depression can feel overwhelming, but small, intentional changes can make a significant difference. Let us know how you’re staying upbeat this winter! We’d love to hear your favorite tips and activities.
